Technology Presents : New Era Of Catharsis

Good Morning, Tweeps!’

‘Let’s see.. Go to school or not?’

‘Assignment in the making, huft!’

And much more simple lines that are often posted as a status on Facebook or Twitter.

Facebook or Twitter are two media that had closely with our lives now, especially among teenagers. At first sight, the two media are similar, as a social network. But in fact, Facebook is a social networking site that connects people who have known each other previously or not. Whereas, Twitter is a microblog, displays something to share the user to the followers.

Today, many people prefer to ‘outpour’ in advance through facebook or twitter compared directly for real. From a personal standpoint, the trend turned out to be a form of energy distribution of a person's emotions to be shared with others.

According to developmental psychology expert of Padjadjaran University, Frederick D. Purba, there are three reasons why people like to confide in facebok or twitter. The first, it can channel the energy in the form of emotions faster. Especially when it can be done with a gadget that can be very easily accessible, such as via smart phones, netbooks, and mobile phones. For example, someone who is sleepy or bored in class, will be impossible to express it directly in front of professors or peers. So, facebook or twitter was about the outlet of emotion.

The second reason people love confiding on facebook and twitter, is because they feel safer. Of course, there are some cases that could electrify results of posting the controversial line of status. Still, according to Frederick, to them, especially those not too grown-up, posting on the status outpouring of hearts would be less risky than reveal their heart directly to the person concerned.

Finally, the reasons that encourage people to confide through facebook and twitter, is reinforcement. When someone directly confides to other people, the response is just from one alone. if the outpouring goes through facebook and twitter, which it can be read (by all friends and followers), the response is not just from one person, but many. Especially when it’s supported with provocative words that will invite people to comment on.
